Rascal Flatts Talk Christmas in July

First Holiday Album in the Works

New music from Rascal Flatts is beginning to look a lot like Christmas.

When asked about what music will follow their latest No. 1 “I Like the Sound of That,” Jay DeMarcus revealed they hope to have a new Christmas album out by the end of the year.

“It’s our first one ever,” he said backstage at a Tuesday night (June 28) Grand Ole Opry. “We’ve done some one-offs for fans but this is the first body of work we’ve ever put together and completed for the holidays.”

DeMarcus added the new collection won’t feature original Christmas music by the band, but they are having fun coming up with new arrangements on the classics.

“You listen to the radio over Christmas, and nobody really wants to hear new music,” Joe Don Rooney added. “They want classics. That’s what the holidays are for us. It takes you back to childhood.”

But seriously, who doesn’t dream of writing that one big Christmas smash and living off the royalties for the rest of forever?

“I did,” DeMarcus admitted, “until I heard ‘Mary, Did You know?’ Then every song paled in comparison. I was like, ‘Well, there goes that dream. There goes the best Christmas song ever written.’”

Plans are up in the air as far as whether the band will issue another single from 2014’s Rewind or move on to new project. “We’re recording stuff and putting some stuff together though,” Rooney said.

The Rhythm and Roots tour continues Friday (July 8) in San Diego with Kelsea Ballerini and Chris Lane.
