Country Legend Revisits Historic Concert Venue

It’s been 34 years since George Strait played Gruene Hall in New Braunfels, Texas.

And yet, there he was on Wednesday night (Nov. 16) in the iconic dance hall, playing for a small crowd of about 300 just like the old days.

Well, not exactly like the old days. According to the Austin Chronicle, he told the crowd that at some of his first shows there, on Sunday afternoons, he only earned the 25-cent cover.

The last time Strait played Gruene Hall was in 1982, shortly after the releasing his first album. And this week’s show was to celebrate his latest album, Strait Out of the Box: Part 2.

His set was two hours and 28 songs long, full of classics, covers and new tunes, ending the night with his “The Cowboy Rides Away.”
