A mix of Americana, country, pop and rock artists have covered songs from Brandi Carlile’s 14-song debut The Story to benefit the War Child UK charity.
Available May 5, proceeds from Cover Stories: Brandi Carlile Celebrates Ten Years of The Story — An Album to Benefit War Child will support children whose families, communities and schools have been impacted by war.
“This is a David and Goliath story,” Carlile said in announcing the album. “Since becoming a mother, the reality of a child’s beautiful life being torn apart by war felt like too big of a problem for me. So I asked my heroes and friends to help me launch a rock at the giant that is our refugee crisis and help in the only way we know how, through the power of music. It’s not how hard you can throw, it’s how high you’re willing to aim.”
Grammy winner Dave Cobb produced the tracks performed by Kris Kristofferson, Dolly Parton and Margo Price. Miranda Lambert sings backing vocals on Anderson East’s rendition of “Josephine,” while Chris Stapleton backs Kristofferson on guitar on “Turpentine.”
Adele’s version of the closer “Hiding My Heart” was originally released as a bonus track from her 2011 album 21, while Ruby Amanfu’s “Shadow on the Wall” is from her 2015 album Standing Still. Pearl Jam offers “Again Today,” and My Morning Jacket’s Jim James provides “Wasted.”
Carlile and her longtime bandmates The Twins (Tim and Phil Hanseroth) produced the Secret Sisters’ “Losing Heart” and TORRES’ “Until I Die.” Former President Barack Obama provided the foreword for the 10th anniversary release.
The Story was originally released in April 2007 and produced by Grammy winner T Bone Burnett.
The limited engagement tour, An Acoustic Evening With Brandi Carlile Performing The Story in Its Entirety and More, starts April 21 in Birmingham, Alabama.
