Chad Michael Murray and comedian Chris Hardwick quickly bonded over their love of Memphis when Murray visited Live With Kelly on Friday (March 17) to talk about CMT’s Sun Records.
When Murray found out Memphis was Hardwick’s hometown, he said he was in love the city.
“It couldn’t have been done anywhere but Memphis,” Murray said of the CMT series. “I’m in love with it. It’s still 1950 in Memphis. It hasn’t changed. If you go outside the Orpheum Theatre or you go down Beale Street, you see these beautiful restaurants, and it’s such an incredible landscape to shoot a show like this. It’s been an honor and a pleasure.”
When Hardwick asked how Murray mastered Phillips’ thick Southern drawl, Murray revealed he studied old tapes of Phillips directing recording sessions at the Sun studio.
“I listened to his young recordings when he was with Jerry Lee Lewis back in the day and they had this great conversation: ‘I’ve got the devil in me, boy!’ And they’re arguing back and forth, and I really felt that this man had such a booming voice,” he said.
Murray also said he feels blessed following this week’s birth of his second child with wife Sarah Roemer. The couple announced her arrival Tuesday (March 14) on social media with a photo of her little hand wrapped around his finger. Their baby girl joins a 22-month-old brother.
“He’s getting used to it,” Murray said of his son getting acclimated to having a new baby sister. “He jumps in bed now every morning and says, ‘Baby, baby.’ And he smiles, and that means, ‘It’s OK. She can stick around for a little while.'”
Sun Records airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on CMT.
