Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards and Sheryl Crow have joined the all-star tribute for Sing Me Back Home: The Music of Merle Haggard on April 6 at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena.
The night will be taped for a concert special and feature previously announced performances by Willie Nelson, Miranda Lambert, Kenny Chesney, John Mellencamp, Dierks Bentley, Loretta Lynn, Hank Williams Jr., the Avett Brothers, Alison Krauss, Ronnie Dunn, Warren Haynes, Jamey Johnson, Kacey Musgraves, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Lucinda Williams, John Anderson, Connie Smith and Bobby Bare.
Richards has been a devoted fan of the Hag throughout his career. Days after Haggard’s passing on what would have been his 79th birthday, Richards posted a video online, calling him, “one of the great country singers of all time and a helluva a guitar player,” in honor of his late friend.
Ben Haggard, the Country Music Hall of Famer’s son and a longtime band member, will join Don Was and Buddy Cannon as musical directors for the concert.
The event was announced in February by Haggard’s family, Willie Nelson and Blackbird Presents, a media company that has produced and recorded similar concert tributes to Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings, Gregg Allman, John Lennon and Jerry Garcia.
The concert marks the one-year anniversary of Haggard’s passing and it would have been his 80th birthday.
