Lauren Alaina: Not Afraid of “Road Less Traveled”

Her First No. 1 Single Was a Six-Year Journey

For Lauren Alaina, coming close to winning American Idol was no guarantee that things would happen overnight.

It actually took almost six years.

But it did happen, and now Alaina is the proud owner of a No. 1 country hit.

“Road Less Traveled” is her sixth single and her first to top Billboard‘s country airplay chart.

“It feels very weird, almost surreal. I have been waiting five years for this,” Alaina told Billboard Country Update. “I handed in this song four years ago, so seeing it rise to the top feels so good.

“My goal was Top 20 at first, and when it got into the Top 10, I wanted to go all the way,” she said. “Thanks so much to everyone for sticking with me this long.”

The song — written by Alaina, Meghan Trainor and Jessie Frasure — sounds a little autobiographical. It encourages listeners to stick with their goal, and follow some simple do’s and don’t’s: Do trust your rebel heart, don’t follow anyone, do march to the rhythm of a different drum, don’t hold it back.

And ultimately, do wear out your boots and kick up the gravel and don’t be afraid to take the road less traveled.

Alison makes her living loving country music. She's based in Chicago, but she's always leaving her heart in Nashville.
