Why Thomas Rhett Understands “Craving”

"All I Thought About Was Getting Back"

Thomas Rhett didn’t write his new Maren Morris duet “Craving You,” but he can relate to every word.

Because when he and his then-girlfriend Lauren were only 22, they were in one of those career situations where they barely ever saw each other.

“I was on a radio tour and she was finishing nursing school, so you couldn’t have asked for two more tough positions to be in as a dating couple. Every time I would leave Knoxville, all I thought about was getting back,” Rhett told Billboard Country Update.

With lyrics like, “Every time we have to say goodbye/I’m counting down until we say hello/And all the in-between is killing me/You know I come unglued from missing you,” it was such a perfect song for him to cut. And adding Morris to the tune was a no-brainer. “I’ve never seen talent like that. She’s the real deal,” he said.

And Rhett knows that the song may not be straight-up traditional country, and he is OK with that.

“You don’t take a bunch of chances to get here and then say, ‘Alright, I’m just going to do the same thing over and over again,'” he said. “That’s not the kind of artist that I am.”
