OFFSTAGE: Keith Urban Survived House Fire and Telemarketing Job
(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that's happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

What? Keith Urban's house burned down to the ground when he was a kid? I had no idea. I knew he'd lost all kinds of instruments and equipment in the Nashville flood, but until I saw this interview on CNN.com, I didn't know he'd been through a catastrophe once before. "I come from very, very working-class parents, and my brother and I grew up in a very basic environment," he explains. "We didn't have lots of stuff, you know. After our own family went through a house fire -- when I was 10, our house burnt down -- so I've experienced firsthand what it's like to lose all that sort of thing. I mean, our whole house went down. Everything we owned went with it." Then, in a lighter moment in the video, Urban talks about other jobs he considered besides being a musician. "I did telemarketing for ... let's just say long enough to know I wasn't cut out for telemarketing," he says.
