Country artists have good hearts and do all kinds of good works. But building a special-needs summer camp? That may be a first. Zac Brown is the guy behind the new Camp Southern Ground, a camp for kids with neurobehavioral and learning difficulties such as ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, Tourette's syndrome, Asperger's syndrome and autism spectrum disorders. It's going to be on 360 acres in the farmlands of Georgia. And did I mention it's free? It sounds like Brown will have programs not just for the children but the rest of their families as well. And while they haven't even broken ground on the camp yet, the website already has all kinds of information about the future state-of-the-art facility, right down to a recipe for Total Omega Pomegranate Blueberry Vegan Swirl Topping. "To me, there is nothing more worthwhile than helping kids," Brown said in a message on the camp's website. "I grew up working with kids while on staff at summer camps and remember how they were impacted during their visits. Their time at camp helped to make a difference in their lives and will last them a lifetime. Camp Southern Ground will work with special needs children while providing them with lodging and facilities to most effectively contribute to their rehabilitation. The highly trained staff will offer a wide variety of therapeutic activities that are designed to help stimulate the mind and body and encourage development, all in a beautiful setting. This is the year to get it started!" No word on when they'll start taking applications, but you can sign up for updates on the site.
