What I've always loved about Ashton Shepherd's music is her attitude. She sings the words I wish I could say to people: "I ain't dead yet." "I should've already set myself free." "I ain't supposed to wanna do a lot of drinkin'." "I can't believe you even spoke to me, what nerve you must have." "You sit there and watch the TV even when I'm lookin' sexy." And more recently, "The word is 'over.' Look it up." So when we chatted on the red carpet at the CMT Music Awards, I was shocked to hear how cheerful she is in real life.
Maybe it's that little baby bump she was wearing under her Isabella Oliver maternity couture dress. (She is due with a little girl on Sept. 15). "God has allowed me to do both: sing country music and be a momma. And we need positive right now. That's what I want to be to people," she said. But when I argued positive, schmositive, I got her to admit that her attitude is not totally gone. "I've got too much sass to let go of that. I am strong willed. And I ain't dead yet," she said. "We only get one go 'round, you gotta live." That's my girl.
