OFFSTAGE: Eric Church Should Keep Singing Like This

Eric Church is married and, frankly, so am I. But if I ever ran into him at a bar and he talked to me like he does in this one song from his new album Chief, I might fall pretty hard for him. In "Keep On," he says to a woman staring at him in a bar, "Where'd you get the cowboy on your arm/And where you want me to drop him off/I see you tryin' to hide that fire inside/But your hold-me-back's almost gone/Yeah it's about time I let cowboy know that I'm a gonna take you home." Church calls the song "cocksure," so I guess it's that swagger and confidence that are such turn ons. And the reality that you might have been wasting time with Mr. Wrong. Especially because so many country songs on the radio right now are about being in some kind of perfect unreal love, this one feels imperfect. (How bad would it be to go home without the guy who brought you?) But it feels imperfect in a good way because sometimes imperfect can make a song feel real. And to that, I say keep on.
