(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that's happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)
I've got to go with Miranda Lambert on this one. Loretta Lynn's "Fist City" is one of the all-time best revenge songs. Forget that it's more than 40 years old. "It's one girl telling another girl, 'I'm gonna kick your ass if you don't stay away from my man.' Which is awesome," Lambert told Rolling Stone. It's hard to argue with the simplicity of that passion and possessiveness.
Another perfect hateful country song on her list? "Goodbye Earl," a classic Dixie Chicks tune. "The girl in the song is a victim of domestic abuse, so she and her friend kill her husband and dump him in the lake -- but there's humor in it. I love that," she said.
And coming in at No. 9 is Tammy Wynette's "Your Good Girl's Gonna Go Bad." Lambert likes it because she hears Wynette saying "I'm tired of being the good girl" after trying to make it work. She also includes Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson and Cee Lo Green on her list.
Tomorrow, I'll be analyzing Merle Haggard's list of songs he wishes he'd written. Does it surprise you that George Strait's "Give It Away" is the only one he chose post-1978?
