Before The Band Perry were named the CMA new artist of the year. Before their "If I Die Young" was named single and song of the year before this sibling trio were being celebrated every which way for their sound and their songwriting, Kimberly Perry admitted that the quality of their original material left something to be desired. "We wrote plenty of bad songs," she told me. Which ones? "Like the first 150 we ever wrote," she told me last week in Nashville. "I'm a big believer that you have to write a lot of bad songs to start finding your good material. You're learning the craft in the early days." One of her first ones was called "Small Town Girl (Ruby Shoes)." She said, "I listen to the lyrics now and I'm like, 'Aww. That was so precious. I was such a kid." But now that their craft has been honed, another song of theirs -- "All Your Life" -- is showcasing this band's lyrical gifts. "We're just so proud of our little love song," she said. "You know what I love about 'All Your Life'? It's the one song that we, as ladies, would love to sing to somebody. But it's also the one song that every guy wants their girl to sing to them." So I guess that means I'd better brush up on my singing to let my husband know that I don't want the whole world, the sun, the moon and all their light. I just want to be the only girl he loves all his life.
