This is a beautiful song. Not contemporary country at all, but it's too beautiful to not share with readers who love Miranda Lambert and her Pistol Annies band. It's "Come All Ye Fair and Tender Ladies," an older-than-old Appalachian folk song, made brand new in this collaboration between the Annies and the traditional Irish folk band, the Chieftains. (It will be on the Chieftains' 50th anniversary album Voice of Ages, due in February.) And I haven't heard all the other tracks by the other artists, but on this one, the haunting vocals from Lambert, Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley seem to be suited perfectly with the tin whistle, uilleann pipes, flute, fiddle and harp backing them. It sounds like the girl trio recorded their vocals in Los Angeles, and that the Chieftains did their part in Dublin. I'd love to hear the two groups get together on a honky-tonk barn burner or even a good ol' Irish slip jig. But for now, a folk song will have to do.
