Fort Loudon Reservoir is a lake Little Big Town's Kimberly Schlapman used to visit in Knoxville, Tenn. "I had some friends who had pontoon boats out there, and they would literally tie all the pontoon boats together so we could walk from boat to boat to boat to boat to boat partying on the weekends," she told me earlier this week. "If you've never been on a pontoon, you're gonna wish that you had one after you hear this song, and you're gonna go find one." She's right. I want one because of the party-in-slow-motion vibe you can't help but hear in the band's new single, "Pontoon." And Schlapman admits that while the song will make a great summertime party tune, it might also be good as your basic make-out song. "This song has enough of a groove to party to it. Or you could also make out to it," she laughed. The mandolin licks and the "motorboatin'" line are the hooks the crowd latches onto when they sing it live, she said. But I think this song is going to move much faster than the five miles an hour they sing about, because of the whole picture it puts in your head: You, on a pontoon, floating, barbecuing, making waves, catching rays, sliding down from the roof and reclining on an inner tube. All that and a sexy groove? Somebody get me a life vest.
