(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that's happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)
Kylie Morgan was the chosen one on Monday night's (July 23) Opening Act. (The reality show on the E! network chooses an unknown talent and gives them less than a week and a lot of coaching and hand-holding to get ready for the big concert.) She's 16, from Oklahoma, sounds like Miranda Lambert and has a dog named after Dierks Bentley. Morgan spent the whole week -- condensed to an hour -- learning a new song to sing when she opened for Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan in Alabama. And as much as I adore this bright new talent, I thought the really big winner of the show was "On the Radio," the song she chose with the help of big shot Nashville producer Dann Huff. He tells me it was written by Sarah Buxton and Craig Wiseman, two of country's best songwriters. And even though Morgan said over and over on Monday's show she was convinced she was going to forget the words to the up-tempo song that was so her, she did not, and the crowd seemed to love this young newcomer.
