NASCAR driver Elliot Sadler tweeted a birthday wish to Blake Shelton, who turned 37 on Tuesday (June 18). It said, "Happy b day. And congrats on #1." But what I think Sadler really meant was, "How about for your birthday you put me in another music video?" Sadler and Shelton have been friends forever, and they teamed up for the videos for "Ol' Red" in 2002 and "Some Beach" in 2004. "Blake and I met 15 years ago at a concert. He was opening for Hank Williams Jr. in Atlanta. And we've always stayed pretty close and tight," Sadler told me at the CMT Music Awards when I asked him how he wound up in those videos. "Both of those videos went No. 1, you know, thanks to me," he joked. "I'm batting a thousand, so if I'm in another video of his, I want to make sure it's a good one before we do it again. I mean, I can't say yes to everything." He described Shelton as funny as hell and said he's the same exact person now as he was 15 years ago. So maybe it is just their busy schedules that have kept them from doing another video in the past nine years. I'm assuming Sadler, who came in eighth over the weekend at the NASCAR Nationwide Series race in Michigan, is very good at his job. Because when I asked him how good he was at racing, he said, "Well, I'm not out here [at the awards] because I suck." But I think Shelton's best birthday gift ever will be if his team wins on Tuesday's season finale of The Voice.
