Of course Dancing With the Stars wanted another contestant with ties to the country scene. Last season's mirror ball champ Kellie Pickler showed America just how charming country can be on and off the dance floor. So I wasn't surprised to see Bill Engvall on the big reveal Wednesday (Sept. 4) on Good Morning America when Dancing With the Stars hosts Brooke Burke-Charvet and Tom Bergeron introduced him as someone who has "parlayed his brand of country comedy into a multiplatinum recording career, complete with a Grammy nomination." And he came out onstage telling the crowd, "Vote for me, vote for me."
Engvall is currently starring as a voice character on CMT's animated comedy series Bounty Hunters and hosted the CMT Music Awards in 2009. And Engvall is one-fourth of the Blue Collar Comedy brand. We can only hope he brings his sense of humor to every rehearsal, show and costume fitting. Engvall's dance partner will be Emma Slater.
He will have some stiff competition. Other contestants include actress Elizabeth Berkley Lauren, Disney star Corbin Bleu, Pretty Little Liars' Brant Daugherty, Valerie Harper, NFL star Keyshawn Johnson, The Voice singer and contestant Christina Milian, Bill Nye (yes, that Bill Nye, the Science Guy), Jack Osbourne, The King of Queens' Leah Remini, Glee's Amber Riley (who will be paired with Pickler's partner Derek Hough) and Jersey Shore's Snooki.
Besides having Pickler on the show last year, Dancing With the Stars has previously featured several country artists in the competition. Sara Evans, Billy Ray Cyrus, Chuck Wicks and Wynonna Judd have all done time on the reality show's stage.
When the new dancing dozen contestants were able to chime in on Good Morning America, Engvall made it clear that he's up for the challenge.
"I'm not throwing down the gauntlet, but Em and I are already dancing on week three," he said. "We've got week one and week two down. Two words: Elton John's 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.'"
Let's hope Engvall isn't judged on his word-count skills.
