"You know, Brandy, 35-year-old women have diaries, too." That's what a record label executive told Brandy Clark when she was playing her new music for some industry people in Nashville. And that was the start of some very high praise for music that is touching so many listeners around the country.
"That's just what this record is. I've never heard it put better," Clark told me about that one little comment. And now other major players are tweeting their two cents about her debut album, 12 Stories.
"Everyone go get the album by @TheBrandyClark I'm telling you, it's so great" -- Brad Paisley wrote.
"Hey @TheBrandyClark ... Your new album is so pure. Everyone should follow you and buy that album!! You're a gem!" -- Jake Owen
"Everyone go buy @TheBrandyClark's new record. it came out today ok bye." -- Kacey Musgraves
"Um ... no, I did not tear up like a baby when listening to @TheBrandyClark's song Just Like Him all day long ....wow, great song." -- Kelly Clarkson
"so @TheBrandyClark put a record out today. it's called 12 Stories & it's the best & most truly country thing I've heard in a while #truth." -- Charlie Worsham
"Just heard @TheBrandyClark's 'Stripes'... WOW. That's incredibly well written y'all. ... Great song!" -- Cole Swindell
Behind all that genuine praise for the album is a debut single "Stripes" and 11 other tracks that will have you wondering where Clark has been all your life. She's been busy writing for other artists, co-writing "Mama's Broken Heart" for Miranda Lambert and recently winning an ASCAP award for The Band Perry's "Better Dig Two."
The Clark songs I have on non-stop right now are "Take a Little Pill," "What'll Keep Me Out of Heaven" and "Stripes." I'm not addicted to prescription drugs, I'm not contemplating having an affair, and I'm not on the verge of killing my husband. But, still, these songs really do sound like they could've come out of any 35-year-old's diary. And I love Clark for that.
