Jamie Lynn Spears is making a country album. At first, that news sent me into a mini-rant about the state of country music today. Because, for one, her big sister is pop star Britney Spears. And two, the li'l Spears was raised as a Nickelodeon star when she played the lead character on Zoey 101. But then I stopped myself mid-rant when it dawned on me that Spears has exactly what country music needs right now -- drama.

She has lived a lot of life in her 22 years, so I'm guessing Spears will not go down the bubble-gum country path. I mean, she had a baby out of wedlock when she was 17. That's got to be good for some perspective, right? Her daughter Maddie is 5 now, so I'll bet Spears has all kinds of stories of single motherhood (and the controversy surrounding it) that can be turned into songs.
What else could work its way into a country song? Let's see. Spears' parents divorced and then reconciled. Her dad Jamie is constantly in the tabloids -- arguing over this or that. And her mom Lynne wrote a pretty revealing book about some of their family's toughest times and dirtiest secrets, Through the Storm: A Real Story of Fame and Family in a Tabloid World. Plus, she has Britney, who has gone through a few train-wreck phases of her own, which could make for some pretty heavy country stuff.
"I think that now it's, like, real," Spears told E! of her reaction to the big changes in her life. "It's like being, like, 'Oh, my gosh! I'm going to have a baby.' It's seeing it all here, and it's real. It's like, 'Oh my goodness, I'm really gonna do this.' And it is. It is. It's like my second baby."
During a recent Twitter chat with fans, Spears said her new music was going to be coming straight from her heart. Hopefully, from her 22 years, as well.
