This proves how much of a man Keith Urban really is: that he put so little thought into his recent (and very drastic) haircut. In an interview on Yahoo.com's news site in Australia, he said the decision was made after a casual conversation with his wife Nicole Kidman.
"I said to Nic, 'I just want to get it all cut off,'" he said. "And she was like, 'Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's just hair, you know. If you don't like it, it will grow back. It's no big drama.' So she was shooting a campaign here in Nashville, and her hairdresser was in town. I went to visit her on the set, and she was like, 'Why don't you get him to do it?' And I went, 'OK,' and I just walked in, he cut it off, and it was done."
A woman contemplating such a dramatic change would have scoured pages and pages of beauty magazines, analyzed her face shape and asked friends, family and co-workers for their opinion. She would have asked strangers for their stylists' names and made and then cancelled appointments. But then there's Urban.
"I just wanted to hack it all off at some point," he admitted. "Idol was always constantly shooting, and I thought, 'What's the least disruptive time as far as Idol is concerned?'"
And that was that. End of story. And the end of long, face-framing layers.
Aside from the media buzz surrounding his cropped haircut, Urban is staying busy but keeping balanced. He says that there's no perfect science to juggling his tour, his family and his American Idol gig.
"I sometimes do a crap job of it, and it falls in a big heap, and I've got to put it back together again," he said. "I don't do anything perfectly, but I love our family, and I'm in it. I'm committed to correcting the balance when it goes out of balance.
"For me, so long as I keep family prioritized, my marriage my priority, then everything works. I always put my marriage first. I just do, and everything falls into line after that."
