Wariner Receives Humanitarian Honor
Steve Wariner is the winner of the 2002 Minnie Pearl Humanitarian Award. Kathy Mattea, the 2001 award recipient, surprised Wariner by announcing the honor Saturday night (Aug. 31) onstage at the Grand Ole Opry. The Opry was commemorating its 4,000th consecutive Saturday night radio broadcast on WSM with a tribute to the late Minnie Pearl. Although Wariner is an Opry member, he had been told that Saturday's appearance had been scheduled for him to perform Pearl's favorite song, "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You?" Wariner has a well-deserved reputation as one of the country music's most generous artists. His charitable activities include projects for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation International, Dream Makers of Middle Tennessee, Second Harvest Food Bank, Garth Brooks Teammates for Kids Foundations and numerous schools.
