Loretta Lynn earned three nominations for the 2004 Americana Honors & Awards show, an event recognizing musicians whose roots-oriented music is often hard to categorize. In addition to her artist of the year nomination, Lynn's Van Lear Rose was named in the album category. Lynn's songwriting led to a song of the year nomination for "Portland, Oregon," a track on the album.

Other nominees for artist of the year include Jim Lauderdale, Allison Moorer and Patty Griffin. The awards ceremony will be part of the Americana Music Association Conference to be held Sept. 23-25 in Nashville.
Mindy Smith also scored three nominations, for her album One Moment More, for the song "Come to Jesus" and for new/emerging artist of the year. Rodney Crowell earned two, for the album Fate's Right Hand and the song "Fate's Right Hand." Slaid Cleaves' Wishbones received an album nod, as did his song "Wishbones," co-written with Ray Wylie Hubbard.
In addition to Smith, other nominees in the newly created new/emerging artist category include Adrienne Young, the Greencards and Old Crow Medicine Show. Instrumentalist of the year nominees are Jerry Douglas, Kenny Vaughan, Sam Bush and Will Kimbrough.
