Kenny Chesney and Renee Zellweger are annulling their four-month marriage, Chesney's publicist confirmed Thursday afternoon (Sept. 15).
Another source close to Chesney said Zellweger was in New York when she initiated the annulment proceedings
and that the singer received the news Wednesday (Sept. 14) in Nashville.
The couple married May 9 on the island of
St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where he owns a house. It was the first marriage for both.
Chesney and Zellweger
met in Los Angeles on Jan. 15 when both appeared at the Concert of Hope tsunami relief benefit. Zellweger brought a giant
margarita on stage during a Jacksonville, Fla., concert on April 29, but their sudden marriage caught everybody by surprise,
both in Nashville and Hollywood.
Nominated for Oscars for her roles in Chicago and Bridget Jones's Diary,
Zellweger won an Academy Award for best supporting actress for her work in Cold Mountain. She previously dated actor
Jim Carrey (her co-star in Me, Myself & Irene) and rock musician Jack White of the White Stripes (who produced
Loretta Lynn's critically acclaimed Van Lear Rose album).
The day after the wedding, Chesney issued a statement
to CMT News that said, "I am incredibly happy. I may well be the luckiest man alive ... to be so in love with someone who
is so perfect for me. It's just hard to imagine that I'm not going to wake up."
Chesney is scheduled to perform Sunday
(Sept. 18) at the Farm Aid concert in Tinley Park, Ill. He will also participate in CMT's One Country concert in Houston
on Oct. 1 to benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina. His new album is expected to be released in November.
