A Tuesday afternoon (April 10) fire destroyed Johnny and June Carter Cash's former home in the Nashville suburb of Hendersonville, Tenn. The property is currently owned by singer-songwriter Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees, who purchased it in December 2005.

The fire was reported shortly before 2 p.m., and a spokesman for the Hendersonville Fire Department told CMT Insider around 2:30 p.m. that the 13,880-square-foot home was already "fully engulfed." By 3 p.m., Hendersonville Fire Chief Jamie H. Steele had told WSMV-TV the structure had burned to the ground.

No one is believed to be injured. Construction crews were reportedly working at the property when the fire started, but the cause of the blaze is under investigation.

The house on Old Hickory Lake served as the Cashes' primary residence for throughout their marriage. June Carter Cash died May 15, 2003, and Johnny Cash died Sept. 12, 2003.

Built in 1968, the property included seven bedrooms, five full baths and an outdoor swimming pool. The house and its 4.6-acre lakefront lot were placed on the market in June 2005 and reportedly sold for $2.3 million to Balinda LLC, a Florida company owned by Gibb and his wife, Linda. The couple planned to restore the home to its original condition.

"This place will always be the spiritual home for the Cashes," Gibb said in a written statement announcing the purchase in January 2006. "My wife Linda and I are determined to preserve it, to honor their memory. We fell in love with it. It's an incredible honor for us. We plan to use the home to write songs because of the musical inspiration."

Through the years, the Cashes' houseguests included a long list of celebrities ranging from Bob Dylan to Billy Graham. The story of Johnny Cash's purchase of the house was a theme in Walk the Line, the film biography starring Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon.
