Beyonce Wins 2009 MTV Video Music Awards Video of the Year
Kanye West apologized to Taylor Swift on his blog after upstaging her at Sunday night's (Sept. 13) MTV Video Music Awards. Meanwhile, her respect for Beyoncé grew even more when the pop diva forfeited her stage time to recognize Swift for her win for best female video category.
West made headlines by unexpectedly jumping onstage and interrupting Swift's acceptance speech following her win for "You Belong With Me."
"Yo, Taylor, I'm really happy for you," West said. "I'll let you finish, but Beyoncé has one of the best videos of all time. One of the best videos of all time!"
Beyoncé was later rewarded with the top honor of the night when "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" was named video of the year. The other nominees in the female video category were Katy Perry's "Hot n Cold," Kelly Clarkson's "My Life Would Suck Without You," Lady Gaga's "Poker Face" and Pink's "So What."
Following the show at New York's Radio City Music Hall, Swift told MTV News she was happy when she saw West joining her onstage during her acceptance speech.
"I was standing there, and I saw Kanye up on the stage, and I was really excited," she said. "And then I kind of wasn't excited anymore."
Swift was not expecting to be invited back to the stage when Beyoncé won the video of the year award.
"They told me to be ready just in case she might want to say something," Swift said. "It was just so wonderful and so incredibly classy of her and just gracious and wonderful to let me say something. She's just been my hero and one of my idols ever since I was little. She's never, ever changed who she is. She's just a great person, and I really look up to her."
After making his comments, West left the awards show and posted a message on the blog section of his Web site. However, the message was absent from the site on Monday morning (Sept. 14).
"I'm sooooo sorry to Taylor Swift and her fans and her mom," West wrote. "I spoke to her mother right after, and she said the same thing my mother would've said. She is very talented! I like the lyrics about being a cheerleader and she's in the bleachers! ... I'm in the wrong for going on stage and taking away from her moment! ... Beyoncé's video was the best of this decade!!!! I'm sorry to my friends at MTV. I will apologize to Taylor 2MRW. Welcome to the real world!!!! Everybody wanna boooooo me, but I'm a fan of real pop culture!!!! No disrespect, but we watchin' the show at the crib right now cause ... well, you know!!!! I'm still happy for Taylor!!!! .... You are very talented!!! I gave my awards to OutKast when they deserved it over me. .... That's what it is!!!!!! I'm not crazy, yall. I'm just real. Sorry for that!!!! I really feel bad for Taylor, and I'm sincerely sorry!!! Much respect!!!!!"
West and Rihanna will be featured during Jay-Z's performance on Monday night's premiere of NBC's The Jay Leno Show airing at 10 p.m. ET. Jay-Z is married to Beyoncé.
Swift will perform two songs and will be interviewed on ABC's The View airing Tuesday (Sept. 15) at 11 a.m. ET.
