ASCAP, the performance rights society, summoned the worker bees of Music Row to a party at Nashville's aptly-named Watermark restaurant Thursday (Oct. 28) to honor the three writers of Brad Paisley's 13th No. 1 song, "Water." That trio included Paisley, Kelley Lovelace and Chris DuBois.

"When I look back," Paisley told the crowd of admirers, "2010 will be the year of water." He wasn't alluding just to the hit (which stayed on top for two weeks) nor to his wildly successful H2O Tour.

He also had in mind the devastating flood that washed through Nashville in May, inundating the Grand Ole Opry House and destroying many of Paisley's prized instruments, as well as his sound equipment and staging.

"Being able to turn [the disaster] into a positive over the course of the year has been very important to me," Paisley continued. (He was among the headliners who played the first show after the Opry House triumphantly re-opened a month ago.)

The event was actually a double celebration since it happened to fall on Paisley's 38th birthday, a fact he wryly acknowledged but declined to dwell on.

After traversing a gauntlet of reporters and TV crews, Paisley ambled into the party room via a back entrance with his manager, Bill Simmons. Frank Rogers, the star's producer, slipped in through the crowd just as award plaques were being handed out.

"These guys have changed a lot of lives," said ASCAP chief Tim DuBois, who signed Paisley to his record deal with Arista Nashville and is Chris DuBois' father.

Paisley praised his record label's promotion team for understanding that "Water" meant more to him than simply another record to try to push up the charts.

"There's never been a team that hits its stride like this team did," he said. "They go out and know this is something we care about."
