"Tunnel of Fire Promo"
The accident occurred Wednesday (Aug. 7) in Sturgis, S.D., at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip, one of the biggest motorcycle rallies in the world. According to a CMT press release issued July 22 announcing the Tunnel of Fire special, Ewing intended to break a Guinness world record by "traveling through a towering inferno longer than a football field."
According to Motorcycle USA news website, Ewing was riding a Yamaha sportbike while attempting to ride through a tunnel of fire more than 360 feet long. He made some practice runs through the tunnel before it was ignited for the stunt. He emerged from the flaming tunnel following a crash, but his bike is a total loss. Details about his condition had not been announced Friday (Aug. 9) although plans were underway to transport him to a burn clinic in Los Angeles.
Ewing, a 32-year-old California native, began riding off-road motorcycles when he was in the third grade. As a professional freestyle sportbike rider, he has completed more than 110 events throughout the nation.
Find out what happens when Tunnel of Fire premieres Tuesday (Aug. 20) at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CMT.
