"Inside the Tunnel of Fire "
Filmed for CMT's Tunnel of Fire, a special for CMT Bike Week premiering tomorrow (Aug. 20) at 8 p.m. ET, the stunt called for Ewing to blast through a literal tunnel of fire longer than a football field.
Here are the details:
The tunnel was constructed of metal pipes and covered with cardboard, hay and wood and drenched with gasoline.
Temperatures inside were expected to reach 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit.
Measuring 360 feet, 2.5 inches, the tunnel was longer than the previously-standing world record of 338 feet.
In order to break the record, the entire tunnel had to be burning before Ewing entered.
Ewing expected to ride through the tunnel at no more than 30 miles per hour, and within 100 feet, there would be no oxygen for him or his motorcycle.
A straight line through the center of the tunnel was drawn to keep Ewing on the right path.
After several practice runs, the tunnel was ignited and Ewing made his approach. He was quickly engulfed in flames and passed out of view of the spectators in attendance.
Emerging from the blaze, Ewing was immediately rushed to a medical center to be treated for burns.
