Taylor Swift has landed another film role and will be working with Meryl Streep, Jeff Bridges and Katie Holmes in The Giver, according to an announcement made Friday (Sept. 27) by the Weinstein Company and Walden Media.

Principle photography will begin Oct. 7 in Cape Town, South Africa, for the production that also stars Brenton Thwaites (Maleficent, Son of a Gun), Alexander Skarsgard (True Blood, The East), Odeya Rush (We Are What We Are, The Odd Life of Timothy Green) and Cameron Monaghan (Vampire Academy, Shameless).

The film is based on Lois Lowry's young adult novel, The Giver, which won numerous awards, including the 1994 Newbury Medal. It has sold more than 10 million copies worldwide and has been translated into 29 languages. The plot centers on the main character, Jonas, and his struggle to understand the dark, complex secrets behind his seemingly ideal community.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Swift will play the Chief Elder, who is responsible for assigning tasks to the young.

The film will be directed by Phil Noyce, whose previous credits include Salt and The Quiet American, from a screenplay written by Michael Mitnick. Walden Media is co-financing and co-producing the film with the Weinstein Company.

Swift's film credits include Valentine's Day and a voice role in the animated film The Lorax. She has also been a guest star on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and made a guest appearance on the season two finale of New Girl.

Swift recently completed the North American leg of her Red tour with a three-night stand at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena. The tour will head to Australia for seven concerts taking place Nov. 29-Dec. 14.
