Country newcomer Cassadee Pope released her first single earlier this year and followed it up with a heartfelt video that had the singer acting in the lead role. No newcomer to cameras, The Voice winner talked to CMT Hot 20 Countdown about shooting the video for "Wasting All These Tears."
"I loved shooting the video," she said. "That's something as a kid that I just dreamed of. I'll be honest, I was the kid in front of the mirror with a hair brush singing into it 'cause that's just something I've always wanted to do."
The theme of "Wasting All These Tears" called for Pope to dig deep to pull off her role.
"I'm not an actress," she said. "I will never claim that, but it's fun and it was cool to play a part. I'm definitely not heartbroken right now. I'm not sad. I'm very, very happy, and I really had to turn on the acting switch."
Despite having to step out of her comfort zone, playing the main role in the video was Pope's idea.
"I gave them a [video] treatment that I really wanted," she said. "I'm still establishing myself as a singer and songwriter, and I want people to get to know me and feel like they can relate. So me acting in the video was just another step to getting people to know me as a person."
Ultimately, she says her first music video was a great experience and, in some ways, a little surreal.
"Seeing 'Wasting All These Tears' on CMT and just seeing it come to life, like, that is beautiful," she said. "I got myself lost in the video, and I didn't realize it was me for a minute. ... Seeing it on TV is unbelievable. It's crazy."
