Stand tall or put your highest heels on, guys and gals. You're going to want to pass the height requirement to get on this Luke Bryan roller coaster.
I'm talking about his new single, "Roller Coaster." Sounds like a fun one, right? It is. In fact, it sounds like it could live next to an ocean in the dead of summer. Yes, in true "summertime Luke" fashion, he keeps us at the beach with this one, but he's turning the party factor down. Way down.
This is a love song. Sure, it's got tempo and all the elements of a "good time" tune with lyrics like "gave me a kiss with Bacardi on her lips," "days turning into long crazy nights," "music getting loud," but it's the context that counts here.
Rather than party rockin' at spring break with tailgates and tan lines, this time, Bryan is lamenting the loss of a short-lived summer romance and recounting those magical moments he wishes hadn't ended.
It'll get to you, ladies, that chorus wailing, "She's like a song playin' over and over in my mind where I still hold her. I had the chance, and I should've told her ... Now she's got me twisted ... like that old beach roller coaster."
It makes me want to find the girl in the song and ask her, "Are you crazy?! Go find him!"
I've always been partial to sentimental Luke, especially when it comes to his love songs. And there have been some good ones, including "Do I" and "Crash My Party," and "Roller Coaster" will definitely fall nicely and neatly in line with those.
This single (co-written by Cole Swindell, by the way) isn't a departure. It's simply different from what you'd expect of a summer anthem from the party king of Panama City. He knows change is a good thing and isn't afraid to show his emotions or versatility.
