Kenny Chesney and his band set up shop Friday night (Aug. 29) in Athens, Georgia, to play a pop-up concert in front of 500 fans at the Georgia Theatre. The event was taped for the first installment of CMT's new Instant Jam series and will premiere Sept. 27 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
On Friday morning, a handful of posters were unveiled and flyers distributed in the downtown area of Athens. With distribution at the University of Georgia's Phi Mu sorority house, the 500 wristbands were claimed in less than eight minutes.
During a show that lasted more than two hours, Chesney performed 23 songs, including some he hadn't played in several years. In addition to his past hits, he also delivered "American Kids" and another song from his new album, The Big Revival, set for release on Sept. 23.
The informal concert also featured some cover tunes, including Hank Williams' "Kaw-Liga" and George Strait's "Carried Away." During the latter song, Chesney used FaceTime to connect with Strait from the stage while the entire audience sang along.
Each episode of CMT's Instant Jam series features live performances and captures all the excitement and energy as artists reveal to fans how to score tickets to an exclusive show in their area while giving a behind-the-scenes look at the hours leading up to their concert.
