One of our great side dishes New Year's Day was turnips. So many don't know how to cook them properly.

6 or 8 turnips
salt pork
2 tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon sugar

Boil turnips with peeling until fork tender. Cool and peel turnips. Render salt pork in microwave. Melt butter. Add butter and meat grease, salt and sugar to turnips. Use a potato masher to mash turnips. I use my mixer, too. Serve with cornbread, adding a little vinegar to the turnips. This simple dish was a huge hit on Jan. 1.
