By virtue of his participation in the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack, the late John Hartford received his first-ever CMA award nomination Tuesday (Aug. 28). Also nominated for the first time, Ralph Stanley and the Stanley Brothers, Ralph and Carter, for their contributions to O Brother. Most-nominated rookie honor goes not to Nickel Creek, Jamie O'Neal, The Soggy Bottom Boys or producer T Bone Burnett, with two each, but to Gillian Welch, who has three in her first time on the ballot. Other first-time nominees: Jessica Andrews, Norman Blake, the Cox Family, Harry McClintock, The Peasall Sisters, Keith Urban and Phil Vassar. Video directors Lawrence Carroll, Gregg Horne, Morgan Lawley, chris rogers and Peter Zavadil are all first-timers, as are songwriters Chuck Cannon, Marcus Hummon, Steven Dale Jones, Darrell Scott (misspelled "Darryl" in the CMA's announcement) and Bobby Tomberlin. Adding spice to the list are bluesman Chris Thomas King and James Carter and the Prisoners. Fiddler Stuart Duncan and producer Mike Clute also are up for the first time. 08/28/01
