Whites Celebrate 50 Years
Buck White, patriarch of Grand Ole Opry group The Whites, and his wife, Patty, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Tuesday (Sept. 25) at a festive gathering attended by 250 friends, colleagues and family members. Mr. and Mrs. White were married Sept. 28, 1951, in Abilene, Texas. With another couple they formed a family group, the Down Home Folks, in 1971. Patty retired in 1973, and Buck has performed for years with daughters Sharon and Cheryl as The Whites. The couple's four daughters - also including Rosie and Melissa - organized the party, held at the I-24 Expo Center near Nashville. Among the speakers were Dobro player Jerry Douglas, once a member of The Whites; WSM-AM (650) and Grand Ole Opry announcer Eddie Stubbs; and Nashville journalist and gadabout Hazel Smith. Memorabilia and photos from throughout the couple's marriage were on display. The Whites appear in the film O Brother Where Art Thou? and in the documentary film Down From the Mountain. Their recording of the Carter Family's "Keep on the Sunny Side" appears on the O Brother soundtrack. Sharon White is married to Ricky Skaggs. 09/28/01
