Dixie Chicks to Open 2002 Houston Rodeo
The Dixie Chicks make their first-ever appearance at the Astrodome when they open the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo on Feb. 12, 2002. Organizers are touting the concert as the group's first full-fledged public concert since the end of their Fly tour in December 2000. After 37 years, the rodeo will move out of the Astrodome in 2003. "As Texas gals, you hear about the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo all your life," bandmember Emily Robison said in a statement. "It's the pinnacle of all rodeos and one of the greatest audiences a Texas musician will ever have. To have a chance to perform the opening concert at the rodeo's last year in the Houston Astrodome is a historical and meaningful event for the Dixie Chicks." The 2002 rodeo and concert series runs from Feb. 12 to March 3. Country and pop artists perform daily. George Strait's closing concert is sold out. Tickets for the Dixie Chicks concert go on sale at 1 p.m. CT Sunday (Oct. 21) through Ticketmaster. 10/17/01
