Freddy Fender's kidney transplant Thursday (Jan. 24) in San Antonio was successful, his doctor said. "He is expected to spend
the next day and a half in the intensive care unit, then move to a regular room on the transplant unit," said Dr. Glenn Halff,
director of organ transplantation at University Hospital. "Barring any unforeseen complications, we expect Mr. Fender to make
a full recovery." Fender, 64, received his new kidney from his daughter, Marla Huerta Garcia, 21. A hospital spokeswoman told
country.com Monday (Jan. 28) that Fender "is doing very, very well" and should go home in a few
days. 01/28/02
