Almost two years after its release, Nickel Creek's self-titled debut album, produced by Alison Krauss, has gone gold, with
shipments of 500,000 copies, a spokeswoman for their label reports. The milestone is a first for the band, for Sugar Hill
Records and for the Welk Music Group. Certification from the Recording Industry Association of America is expected shortly.
The acoustic trio -- Chris Thile, Sara Watkins and Sean Watkins -- are in the studio with Krauss working on a second album,
tentatively scheduled for release in early fall. 01/30/02
