The music industry's battle against illegal downloading of recordings escalated Monday (Sept. 8) when the Recording Industry
Association of America announced it has filed lawsuits against 261 people trading music online. Filed in federal courts throughout
the U.S., the suits are aimed at Internet users who each distribute an average of approximately 1,000 music files via peer-to-peer
networks such as KaZaA, Morpheus and Gnutella. The RIAA has also introduced an amnesty program available to copyright infringers
who have not been been named in a lawsuit or subpoena filed by the organization. Under terms of the amnesty program, the RIAA
will not seek legal action if the individuals delete all unauthorized music files from their computers, destroy any copies
in their possession and promise not to upload unauthorized files in the future. 09/08/03
