Canadian Music Industry Pioneer Dies
Canadian music industry executive Walter Grealis, 74, died Tuesday (Jan. 20) in Toronto following a lengthy battle with cancer. He served as publisher of RPM, a Canadian music trade publication, from its inception in 1964 until it closed in 2000. Grealis was instrumental in the creation of the RPM Gold Leaf Awards, which evolved into the Juno Awards as the Canadian equivalent of the Grammys. He also established the Big Country Awards, the forerunner of the Canadian Country Music Awards.
