Production is tentatively planned to begin this summer on Walk the Line, a film of Johnny Cash's life. With Joaquin Phoenix cast as Cash and Reese Witherspoon as his wife, June Carter Cash, the film will be directed by James Mangold, who also directed Identity, Kate & Leopold and Girl, Interrupted. Prior to his death on Sept. 12, 2003, Cash had agreed to serve as a creative consultant on the project. The film will focus on his early career in Memphis and the stardom and personal strife he experienced in the '60s.
