Dimebag Darrell, the Damageplan guitarist who was killed this week in an Ohio club multiple shooting, was the son of a country
music songwriter and producer. Dimebag was born as Darrell Abbott on Aug. 20, 1966, in Dallas, where his father Jerry Abbott
was active in country music circles and wrote songs for Buck Owens and Freddy Fender, among others. Father introduced son
to guitar at an early age, and he learned quickly. Dimebag played clubs and bars around Dallas for years. Even after discovering
heavy metal and hard rock and forming Pantera, Dimebag and his brother Vinnie Paul Abbott also contributed music to a David
Allan Coe album, Rebel Meets Rebel, that Vinnie Paul described as a "crossover country metal thing."
