Ralph Stanley underwent triple bypass surgery Monday morning (June 27) at a hospital near his home in southwestern Virginia.
Doctors said the five-hour operation was successful and Stanley is expected to make a full and rapid recovery. The 78-year-old
bluegrass artist went in for a regular checkup earlier and doctors recommended the surgery. Stanley released a gospel album,
Shine On, on June 7.
