"Sneaky" Pete Kleinow, whose steel guitar playing as an original member of the Flying Burrito Brothers influenced the Southern California rock scene, died Saturday (Jan. 6) in Petaluma, Calif. He was 72 and had been battling Alzheimer's, said his daughter, Anita. Kleinow was also an in-demand studio musician who had recorded with John Lennon, Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, Joni Mitchell, Joe Cocker, the Rolling Stones, the Bee Gees, the Ventures, Joan Baez and Sly & the Family Stone. He later became successful in film work in animation and special effects and won a 1983 Emmy for The Winds of War. At the time of his death, Kleinow was leading the band, Burrito Deluxe. Plans for a memorial service in Joshua Tree, Calif., are pending.
