Banjo Pioneer Scruggs Feted With 83rd Birthday Party
Earl Scruggs was honored Sunday (Jan. 21) in Nashville with a surprise party celebrating his 83rd birthday. Family and friends hosted the event at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. Among those attending were Gary Scruggs, Randy Scruggs, Del McCoury, Rob McCoury, John Anderson, Curly Seckler, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band members Jeff Hanna and Jimmy Ibbotson, Travis Tritt, Tracy Nelson, Emmylou Harris, Sharon White, Buck White, Jody Maphis, Tut Taylor, Cowboy Jack Clement, Rev. Will Campbell, Jerry Douglas, Dan Tyminski, Tom T. Hall, Rob Ickes, Matraca Berg, Jon Randall, Larry Cordle, Dave Pomeroy, Nashville mayor Bill Purcell and U.S. Rep. Jim Cooper. Scruggs was born Jan. 6, 1924, in Flint Hill, N.C.
