Tejano Singer Emilio Navaira Critically Injured in Bus Crash
Tejano vocalist Emilio Navaira was critically injured early Sunday morning (March 23) when his tour bus collided with traffic barrels on Interstate 610 in Houston. Doctors said Navaira, 45, sustained a severe brain injury and remained in a coma Monday. Six members of his band, Rio, were also injured in the crash that occurred following a performance at a Houston club. They were returning to their homes in San Antonio in preparation for a tour of California later this week. Authorities said Navaira was apparently driving the bus. He remained in a medically-induced coma Monday at a Houston hospital. Navaira had already established a substantial following in the Hispanic community when Capitol Nashville promoted him to a mainstream country audience with the 1995 album, Life Is Good. He charted six country singles, including "It's Not the End of the World," which reached No. 27 on the Billboard country chart. Navaira won a Grammy for his 2002 album, Acuérdate.
