Dolly Parton is expected to receive an honorary doctoral degree from the University of
Tennessee in recognition of her work as a musician, entertainer and advocate for education. Parton founded the Imagination
Library program in 1996 in her native Sevier County, Tenn. The initiative, which provides children with a new book every month
from birth to 5 years of age, is now active in 46 other states and Canada and the United Kingdom. Pending approval from the
university's board of trustees, Parton will receive a doctorate in humane and musical letters during spring commencement on
May 9.
