Funeral services will be held Thursday (Feb. 18) in Little Rock, Ark., for rockabilly pioneer Dale Hawkins, best known for co-writing and singing the 1957 hit, "Susie Q." He died Saturday (Feb. 13) in Little Rock at age 73 following a battle with colon cancer. Hawkins, a native of Goldmine, La., recorded "Susie Q" during an after-hours session at radio station KWKH in Shreveport, La. It featured teenaged guitarist James Burton, who later found fame as a session musician in Los Angeles and as a sideman for Ricky Nelson, Elvis Presley, Emmylou Harris and many others. The Rolling Stones recorded "Susie Q" on their 1964 album, 12 x 5, but the song became a Top 20 hit for Creedence Clearwater Revival in 1968.
