Chely Wright and gay activist Lauren Blitzer were married Saturday (Aug. 20) during a private ceremony at Blitzer's aunt's
home in Connecticut, one of several states recognizing marriages between same-sex couples. The ceremony was presided by a
minister and a rabbi because Wright is Christian and Blitzer is Jewish. The couple met in 2010 shortly after Wright announced
she was a lesbian with the release of an album,
Lifted Off the Ground, and memoir,
Like Me: Confessions of a Heartland
Country Singer. Blitzer is development director for Faith in America, a nonprofit organization established to end bigotry
against the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. Wright had a No. 1 country hit with "Single White Female" in
1999. The couple reside in the New York City area.
